Walmart Eyes Q4 Launch of Vudu-Branded Service

By: Mary White    July 27, 2018

Rumor has it that Walmart will enter the subscription video competition during the fourth quarter of this year. In 2010, Walmart acquired Vudu, the free service that offers movie and TV viewing for purchase or rent. Vudu is available with PlayStation®3 and PlayStation®4, Xbox 360®, Xbox One, iPad®, Android TV, Apple TV®, Chromecast and smartphones via the Vudu app. Noticeably absent is streaming availability on Amazon Fire Stick or Fire TV. Walmart continues to battle Amazon with its offerings and is expected to offer its Vudu streaming service for a smaller price tag – somewhere around $8 per month.

It’s unclear what content the subscription video on demand (VOD) service will include. If it’s both licensed TV shows and movies, as well as some original productions.

Rumblings of Walmart adding a streaming service has been around for a couple of years and not proven true thus far. We’ll have to wait and see what Q4 2018 brings.
