What do Snapchat’s new Context Cards really mean?

By: Angela Besprozvanny    October 25, 2017

Have you ever seen a great Snap of a restaurant you want to visit? Well now, Snapchat’s new Context Cards give users a way to search for more information from a Snap. If you swipe up on the image, you can see more details about the geofilter with content collected from TripAdvisor, Foursquare, Michelin and goop. Users can also request a ride with Uber or Lyft, or even reserve a table through OpenTable or Bookatable. Similar to Google Maps, it also provides directions, operating hours and phone numbers.

Snapchat is currently in control of where the content appears, so businesses are not yet able to choose to attach context cards to geofilters. This feature could increase the time spent within the app and be more valuable if businesses could push messages or promotions to certain users within the cards. Depending on how Snapchat utilizes the search and location data, this could be a great marketing tool for local businesses. There is certainly a need for “visual-first” search, but it is unclear how Snapchat will continue to evolve the concept compared to its competitors.
